Ysgol Gymraeg Y Lon Las School, Swansea, Wales

February 2008

Internet safety was the theme of the BT Internet Ranger event at Ysgol Gymraeg Y Lon Las School in Llansamlet, Swansea. Speaking about the need to ensure everyone’s safety on the internet, Welsh Assembly member for Swansea East, Val Lloyd said “BT’s Green Cross Code resource highlights the importance of staying safe online in a practical way, with simple tips that will benefit adults and children alike.”

Therfield School, Hertfordshire, England

February 2008

Twenty-five pupils from Therfield School in Hertfordshire held a BT Internet Rangers event in February 2008. Oliver Heald, MP for North East Hertfordshire, who attended the event said “This is an excellent initiative and I think young people really appreciate being given the chance to pass on their knowledge to the older generation”.

Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire

November 2006

Over 100 Internet Rangers from North Lincolnshire played teacher in November 2006 when they took part in the biggest BT Internet Ranger day ever! The pupils from seven local schools invited their family members into their classrooms for an internet lesson where the young people themselves were the teachers. A full page was devoted to the event in the local newspaper and it was also featured on the evening television news.

Grimsby

June 2006

Year six pupils from Healing Primary School in Grimsby became Internet Rangers to give their parents and grandparents an internet lesson. One attendee, 73-year-old retired head teacher Margaret McNally said “My granddaughter Penny had to do a lot of arm-twisting, it may sound silly but new technology frightened me. But Penny was brilliant, she really encouraged me to come along to the Internet Rangers Day and I'm glad I did. I've changed my mind completely about computers and am now looking to get one for myself "

In November 2006, BT hosted the largest ever Internet Ranger day. Over one hundred school children in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire swapped places with their teacher to give their family members an internet lesson.

Organised with the help of the Digital Inclusion Unit at North Lincolnshire Council and BT, pupils from seven local schools proved that you are never too old to learn a new skill and never too young to teach one.  

A full page was devoted to the event in the local newspaper and it was also featured on the evening television news.

Healing Primary School, Grimsby

More than 20 year six pupils from Healing Primary School in Grimsby became Internet Rangers to give their parents and grandparents an internet lesson. One attendee was 73-year-old retired head teacher Margaret McNally.

Invited by her 10 year old granddaughter Penny, Margaret said "Penny had to do a lot of arm-twisting, it may sound silly but new technology frightened me. But Penny was brilliant, she really encouraged me to come along to the Internet Rangers Day and I'm glad I did."

"Before I went along to the session I had never considered getting a computer. My granddaughter showed me how easy the internet can be, I'm able to find out lots of information and have even been able to donate to a charity I support. I've changed my mind completely about computers and am now looking to get one for myself!"
